Common sneezeweed does not cause you to sneeze, or irritate allergies as the name implies. It is pollinated by insects, not the wind, so it is too large to cause hay fever symptoms. It was actually dried and made into a powder by Cherokee and other Native Americans, and was used as snuff to induce sneezing to relieve congestion and headaches. Helenium autumnale is a part of the daisy/aster family and a wonderful plant for the garden that has a little moisture. It attracts bees and butterflies with it’s heavy blooming in summer and fall.
