Samp rose mallow is such a distinctive native plant. It has big hibiscus flowers in August that only last a day, but a happy plant will send many out every day, for weeks on end. The flowers can be light pink or white with a crimson center and look very tropical. The plant itself is very statuesque and makes a big impression. It is naturally found in wet areas, but I have found with proper establishment, it can go on to tolerate drier soils. Like most plants that can be adaptable, the more sun you give it the more moisture it will need to succeed. It is the host to several butterfly and moth caterpillars, and a favorite of hummingbirds, bees, songbirds and myself.
